Be Ready for Jackson & Madison Flood Damage When You Partner with SERVPRO

The Hinds and Madison County areas are no strangers to flood damage.  It has been 40 years since Jackson has experienced a major flood, but heavy rainfall can happen quickly and cause flooding that is localized in urban areas.  This may sound scaled down from the Easter Flood of ‘79, but the damage done can be dangerous and devastating.

Flood Water Vs. Other Water Losses

Flood damage in Jackson and Madison is considered a Category 3 water loss, meaning it is grossly contaminated.  The water carries solid debris and bacteria that can cause diseases. Floods can be very dangerous, but even if the flooding is not life-threatening, bacteria and viruses being carried in the water can cause serious health risks.

How To Mitigate

Safety is a priority in flooding situations.  Live electrical wires are a serious, life-threatening hazard.  Like any water damage, standing water must be removed and the structure dried, but with added protections and cautions.  Porous materials sometimes cannot be cleaned and disinfected to required standards post-flood. Carpeting and padding must be removed and discarded.  Drywall needs to have flood-cuts done to remove any hidden water. Flood-cuts can potentially save the remaining wall and prevent microbial growth from starting to spread.  Any water-soaked insulation must be discarded too. If the debris contains chemicals, sewage, or other potentially harmful materials, we might need to contain the solids and dispose of them according to local hazardous waste rules.
