Sewage Cleanup and Restoration

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Toilet Overflow or Sewer Backup?
Call Today 601.353.2286

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO Professionals will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

4 facts about water damage...

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

1. Mold can begin growing in as little as 24 hours!

Potentially dangerous mold needs three things to start growing: oxygen, moisture and organic material. In an untreated area with these factors, mold can visibly form very quickly. While not all mold strains are toxic, there are several types that are dangerous to your health; you definitely don’t want Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (Black Mold) growing in your home!

2. Even the smallest crack in a pipe can spill 250 gallons of water a day!

An eighth of an inch may not sound massive, but a crack that size in a water supply pipe can rack up massive repair bills in a hurry. As much as 250 gallons can leak out in a day’s time! Not fun to deal with!

3. Floodwater can be electrically charged – and deadly!

Even a few inches of water can reach outlets, baseboard heaters, power cords and other devices connected to your electrical system. As soon as you see unwanted water, try to turn off the electricity to the affected area. If you are unable to do so safely, or the fuse box is located in the affected area, contact your electric utility and have them disconnect the power to your home from their end.

4. Even fresh water can turn into a biohazard over time!

Water damage comes in three categories – clean, gray and black:

• Clean water has no contamination. It can come from clean water sources, such as water supply lines, tub overflows or fresh rainwater.

• Grey water has contaminants that are not considered pathogenic. These contaminants still have a chance to cause illness or discomfort. Washing machine overflows, aquarium water and washing machine leaks are all examples of grey water flooding.

• Black water has pathogenic contamination and is unsanitary. Sewage, chemical waste, and any water sitting for more than 72 hours are all considered black water situations. If left alone, clean water will turn into a pathogenic biohazard in only a few days.

How To Prevent A Water Damage

7/8/2020 (Permalink)

No matter what time of year it is, if you’re going to be away from your home for an extended amount of time – even just overnight – it’s a smart idea to turn off your water until you return home. Why? Because it doesn’t take very much water to cause a whole lot of damage! If your pipes freeze and burst while you’re gone, or if a washer hose ruptures or a supply line leaks, major water damage can occur! There are a few things you can do before heading out of town to give you peace of mind when it comes to the state of your home’s water.

Shut off the Main Water Valve

Your safest bet is to turn off the main water valve. Make sure the adults in your home know where the main shutoff valve is and know how to turn it on and off. (Knowing this will also come in handy if you’re at home during an emergency, so the water can quickly be shut off!) Locate the main water valve near your water meter usually located in the basement, near the front of the house, attached to the outside of the home’s exterior, or in an underground box in the yard.

There are two types of main shutoff valves. You’ll probably find what’s called a “gate valve” if you’re in an older home. Turn the rounded handles a certain number of times to open or close the valve. The “ball valve” is more common today. Turn the lever-like handle 90 degrees to turn the water on or off. If this valve crosses the pipes, it’s closed; if it’s parallel to them, it’s open.

Test shutting off the valve ahead of time by locating the main shutoff valve, turning it off, and running a faucet. If no water comes out, you’ve successfully turned off your home’s water supply!

Turn off Individual Water Valves

But what if you’re leaving during the summer and you can’t turn off your entire water supply because you have automatic sprinklers? If this is the case, you can simply turn off individual water valves to the water sources with the highest damage risk. These sources include the dishwasher, washing machine, and ice-maker. Individual shutoff valves tend to be located directly on the supply lines leading to most appliances, including toilets and faucets. Usually, this will be a small rounded handle that you’ll turn clockwise. Doing this will turn off the water to that source. (Take note that the ice-maker shutoff valve may be under the sink or in the basement!)

If you’ll be shutting off individual water supplies, it’s a good idea to kill two birds with one stone and check your supply lines themselves. They can become weak over time, resulting in leaks, cracks, or bulging. If you notice these or other forms of corrosion, you may want to repair or replace them before leaving.

Turn off Water Supply to Outdoor Faucets

If you’re leaving during the colder seasons, it’s a good idea to also shut off the water to your outdoor faucets as well. Their shutoff valve will most likely be located inside your house. Shut it off before you head out the door. Once you’ve shut off the valve, turn on the exterior faucet to drain any excess water. And remember to detach the hoses, too!

Freezing Pipes: How You Can Prep Now for Later

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

It’s the Summer in the middle of Mississippi, and the last thing on your mind is freezing cold winter nights!   By taking a few steps now, and learning a few tips for the colder months, you can protect yourself from busted pipes leading to water damage!

DO NOW:

  1. Check your faucets and pipe heads to make sure they are functioning properly.
  2. Check to see that your pipes are installed properly.  This can be cool summer or fall night project BEFORE it gets cold and dark.  Reward yourself with a popsicle!
  3. Clean your gutters.  Unclogged gutters make it easier for rain to drain.  This prevents ice buildup that could damage your gutters or even your roof.

REMEMBER LATER:

  1. Drain water from outside faucets.  When water freezes and becomes ice, it expands which could cause your pipes to break.
  2. Disconnect hoses from outside faucets.  This ensures no more cold water is being stored.

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

In January of 2018, Jackson, Mississippi, was taken back by a surprise freeze.  The same weather issue occurred in early February of 2018 as well.  During this freeze, many commercial businesses and residential homes were affected by water damage due to freezing pipes.  Some important tips to remember when freezing weather affects a region are as follows:

1.  Protect your pipes!  As water hardens, it expands.  Drain water from outside faucets.  Disconnect hoses from outside faucets.  Protect water pipes with insulation.

2. Make sure the head is functioning properly in your business or home before freezing weather occurs.

3. Make sure your gutters are not clogged because that can cause the ice not to have a way to drain as ice is melting off a roof.

In our next blog, we will give you some more tips on how to protect yourself and be prepared before bad weather strikes.  And remember when it happens and you are in need of help, call SERVPRO of Jackson & SERVPRO of Madison County at 601-353-2286.  We are always here to help!

Pipe Bursting Issues: 2

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

As we learned in the previous blog, freezing weather can cause many problems when dealing with pipes within homes and businesses.  Let's continue with the tips on what you can do in order to help ensure you will not have a water loss when freezing weather enters your region.

More Tips:

4.  When the weather causes freezing, be sure to keep your heat on within your home.  It also helps to have a fire going during this type of weather.

5.  Another way to help pipes not freeze up is to leave a trickle of water coming out of faucets.  Keeping the water moving through pipes will, in most cases, prevent the water turning into ice within your pipes.

6. Another good tip is to remember to stock up on necessities when bad weather is on the horizon.  Make sure you have bottled water, canned food items, and wood to make a fire.

Remember when water causes a problem in your home, call SERVPRO of Jackson & SERVPRO of Madison County to mitigate and restore your home.  We are always happy to do a moisture check if you are concerned about any moisture in your home.  We are always here to help!  601-353-2286
