When heavy rains hit central Mississippi an unprepared home can stand little chance.  For this reason SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County advise you to stay ahead of the game by preparing yourself and your home.

Sump Pump:  If you have one, make sure it is properly working, and that you have a battery back-up in case of a loss of power.

Outdoor Equipment:  Cover the grill and bring in lawn and patio furniture.

If you have water damage due to heavy rain of flooding, call SERVPRO of Jackson & Madison County at 601-353-2286.  We’ll make it “Like it never even happened”, and we’re always here to help.

A Plan to Protect in Case of Fire

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

Does your family have an evacuation plan in case of a fire?  No one thinks it will happen to them, but household fires are more common than you think.  The average number of residential fires each year is 374,000! Please know that fire can get out of control and cause injuries and even death.  Therefore it is important for you and your family to have a plan in practice.

The Many Potential Causes of Household Fires:

  1. The top leading cause cause of a household fire is cooking.
  2. Next comes faulty heating systems.
  3. The third most likely cause of household fires is an electrical malfunction.
  4. The fourth most common cause is open flames in or around the house.

Evacuation Plan

An escape plan should be created for a home and an office building.  Everyone should be aware of the plan, and have a common meeting place that is a safe distance from the building.  This plan should be practiced so that no one is confused in case of an emergency.

Check Smoke Detectors Monthly

Some think that once their smoke detectors are installed, their work is done.  Wrong. In order to ensure everyone’s safety, smoke detectors should be checked for functionality once a month.  Write the date you checked them on a calendar so that you remember next month. Also, not to be forgotten, change the batteries twice a year!

Accessible Fire Extinguisher

Because hazardous situations like cooking or using electricity occur on a daily basis, you must have a fire extinguisher in a visible and easy to access space.

If a fire occurs in your home or office, SERVPRO of Jackson & SERVPRO of Madison County is ready to help!  601-353-2286

Electrical Fire Prevention

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

Electrical fires are one of the leading causes of house and business fires in the United States.

You may lessen your chances of an electrical fire with a few simple steps:

  1. Closely examine electrical equipment and their cords.
  2. Change out cords that are old, rotting, or becoming frayed.  These are hazardous!
  3. Hire a licensed electrician to survey your home or business.  She or he will check your outlets and any wires that could lead to fire.

Older Building are Especially at Risk

If your home or commercial business is older, it is crucial that you take the steps listed above.  Wires and outlets may have been damaged since last time your property was inspected.

We strive to keep you informed in hopes that this type of emergency never occurs.  If it does occur and you need assistance, SERVPRO of Jackson & of Madison are here 24/7 to answer your calls, and have our trained professionals help in your time of need. You can reach us by dialing 601-353-2286.

The 3 Types of Damage that Come with Fire

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

The Damage You May Not Foresee

Home or commercial business fires lead to more damage than the obvious burning of furniture, walls, and other objects.  Some believe that only the items the fire touches need to be replaced.

Soot

As a fire grows, the smoke it puts out begins to cover every surface in the room.  This smoke leaves soot that can damage many structures and surfaces.

Odor

The smoke that inevitably occurs when there is fire leaves an odor that is extremely hard to get rid of.  Thankfully SERVPRO of Jackson & of Madison County have world-class equipment that will make it smell “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage

As the fire burns, firefighters and sprinklers work diligently to put it out and keep everyone safe.  In the process, your possessions are subject to water damage.

SERVPRO of Jackson & of Madison County is a restoration company with trained professionals experiences with all three of these types of damage.  We are here 24/7, and 365 days a year because we know that fire is a traumatizing event and you want to get back in your home as soon as possible.  We promise to restore your fire loss and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Jackson's Shifting Foundations

6/5/2019 (Permalink)

Often times when water damage occurs in the home it is due to unpredictable occurrences. All of the pipes and appliances in your home can deteriorate or become damaged.  Pipes sometimes leak; sinks, dishwashers, washing machines, or other appliances can overflow. When this happens, it is best to leave the work to trained professionals so that your structure, whether it’s your home or business, does not face additional damage.  If left unattended to, or if improperly restored, it could lead to a deteriorating foundation.

In Jackson, MS we are accustomed to shifts in our foundation.  Shifting can lead to structural leaks. Rain-water is another way in which your property could cause serious damage.  At SERVPRO of Jackson and of Madison County, we take water damage seriously, and work hard to keep our neighbors informed of the risks to their homes.  We stay open 24/7 to keep you, and your property safe! The Jackson Microbial Menace

4/2/2019 (Permalink)

Microbial growth has appeared on the wall of this storage room.

When black or green spots start to show up on your walls and ceilings, then there is a good chance that the spots are beginning stages of microbial growth. Microbial growth manifests when bacteria is allowed to cultivate in an ideal environment. Microbial growth needs moisture to thrive, and can have serious side effects of the tenants of the property. If just wiped away, the microbial growth will come back with a vengeance. It will only come back stronger. Smoky Mess

6/4/2018 (Permalink)

Insulation makes it hard to eliminate smoky odors

You may wonder what causes the most fires in the United States.  Let me tell you what that would be--electrical fires are the most common cause of household fires across the United States.  Home and business owners must carefully watch extension cords, chargers, and cords that plug into the wall from TVs, etc.  If an electrical cord is old or beings to fray, immediately change it out!  If home owners keep a close watch over cords and electrical equipment, it will lessen the chance that your equipment would cause a fire in your own home. If you live in an older home or have a commercial business in an older facility, it may be worth your while to have a licensed electrician come in to check your outlets and any wires he or she can get to in your home.  Over time, wires can fray which could lead to a fire. If a fire does occur and you need assistance, call SERVPRO of Jackson & of Madison County at 601-353-2286.  Always here to help. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Pipe Bursting Issues: 1

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

Broken pipe in wall causes damage to this Jackson office.

In January of 2018, Jackson, Mississippi, was taken back by a surprise freeze.  The same weather issue occurred in early February of 2018 as well.  During this freeze, many commercial businesses and residential homes were affected by water damage due to freezing pipes.  Some important tips to remember when freezing weather affects a region are as follows:

1.  Protect your pipes!  As water hardens, it expands.  Drain water from outside faucets.  Disconnect hoses from outside faucets.  Protect water pipes with insulation.

Pipe Bursting Issues: 2

Roof leak creating a water issue in this Ridgeland customer's home.

As we learned in the previous blog, freezing weather can cause many problems when dealing with pipes within homes and businesses.  Let's continue with the tips on what you can do in order to help ensure you will not have a water loss when freezing weather enters your region.

More Tips:

4.  When the weather causes freezing, be sure to keep your heat on within your home.  It also helps to have a fire going during this type of weather.

5.  Another way to help pipes not freeze up is to leave a trickle of water coming out of faucets.  Keeping the water moving through pipes will, in most cases, prevent the water turning into ice within your pipes.

6. Another good tip is to remember to stock up on necessities when bad weather is on the horizon.  Make sure you have bottled water, canned food items, and wood to make a fire.

Remember when water causes a problem in your home, call SERVPRO of Jackson & SERVPRO of Madison County to mitigate and restore your home.  We are always happy to do a moisture check if you are concerned about any moisture in your home.  We are always here to help!  601-353-2286

SERVPRO knows that storms are not set to a specific schedule, that’s why all SERVPRO franchises keep their doors open 24/7. Roof damage caused by thunderstorms is a major problem for homeowners, here are some tips to prevent roof damage to your home:

  • Trim trees and remove dead branches so they won’t damage your home if they fall because of wind.
  • Clear gutters and downspouts of debris. As the leaves fall, make sure they aren’t building up in the gutters.
  • Check for any roof damage. Pay attention to surface bubbles and areas with missing gravel on flat roofs or missing or damaged shingles or tiles on sloped roofs.
  • Check the flashing on the roof to make sure it’s in good condition to help prevent water from seeping through.
  • If your roof needs replacing, consider impact-resistant roofing materials, especially if you live in an area where hail storms are common.

Hurricane Harvey Damage

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Drywall removal due to water damage from Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas

SERVPRO knows how important it is to remove contaminated drywall quickly before microbial growth begins to grow. Hurricane flood waters can carry lots of bacteria and filth which can cause microbial growth to set in unless properly taken care of. Most hurricane storm waters are often considered to be at least a category 2 water damage which carries gray water. As you can see in this image, trained technicians removed affected drywall and isolated the unsanitary material which also helps the drying process. SERVPRO ensures that homeowners are well taken care of by demolition and removal of infected materials and preventing microbial growth buildup through antimicrobial application. This specific incident was dealt with timely service and a professional courteous attitude. Thanks to this customer for giving us a positive review and allowing us to help her in her time of need.

Cutting Out Drywall

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

This picture shows how drywall has to be removed when it is saturated and not drying out quickly enough.

Water damage to homes during hurricanes are unavoidable, unfortunate situations. SERVPRO was able to service a victim of a water loss due to a hurricane recently. As seen in the picture, we removed parts of drywall on the walls as part of the drying process. Unless taken care of promptly, once water has saturated materials it is likely that microbial growth will occur. In this instance, the drywall was not drying quickly enough to prevent the microbial growth. We removed parts of the drywall in areas that could not be restored in order to salvage the rest of the drywall. The owner commented on the technicians who responding, saying that they were, "Professional and polite." SERVPRO has backing of a nation-wide corporation to insure that each franchise has the resources to get the job done right.

Microbial Growth Removal

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

This image shows how devastating microbial growth can be to a structure.

In this image, the home was infested with microbial growth from water damage that was not dealt with properly in the past. SERVPRO's professional demolition team removed all the affected materials and applied antimicrobial treatment to prevent any possible reoccurring microbial growth. It is important to always treat water damage in a professional manner using the latest moisture reading equipment to ensure structure materials have dried properly. If materials are not dried within seventy-two hours microbial growth has most likely occurred. Dwelling in a structure with high concentrations of microbial growth can possibly be detrimental to a person's health with a possibility of causing nasal and throat irritation, as well as eye and skin irritation. Microbial build up can also intensify allergies in homeowners and pets. SERVPRO is highly trained in microbial growth remediation.

Smoke and Soot

5/31/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Jackson & SERVPRO of Madison County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Mold in Jackson, MS

5/31/2017 (Permalink)

Mold on a ceiling

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

What To Do When It Floods!

5/24/2017 (Permalink)

Since SERVPRO partners with the American Red Cross we love sharing their tips when it comes to flooding occasions.

Check out www.redcross.org for more information!

FLOODING Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:

1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

2. Stay away from floodwaters.

3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

4. Keep children out of the water.

5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

DOWNLOAD EMERGENCY People should download the free Red Cross Emergency App to receive emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of tornadoes, flooding and other disasters, as well as locations of shelters. The App also includes emergency first aid information and a Family Safe feature which allows people to instantly see if loved ones are okay. The free Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.

Mold: Do vs. Don't

5/24/2017 (Permalink)

Mold!

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • DO stay out of affected areas.
  • DO turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • DO contact SERVPRO of Jackson for mold remediation services.

Fire Help

5/2/2017 (Permalink)

When there is a fire, everything becomes very chaotic in a short amount of time.  Here are some basic guidelines on what to do if a fire happens in your home or at your business.  Fires caused by electrical issues are the most common at this time.

Make sure that there is always clear and unobstructed pathway to the exit in case of fire.  Make sure your electrical cords are in good condition before you use them.  Make sure you don not overload electrical outlets.

If you hear a fire alarm, always treat that as if there is a real fire.  If there is smoke in the air, stay low to the ground so you do not inhale smoke.  Crawl to the nearest exit with your hand along the wall so you do not become disorientated.  Once you are away from the fire and in a safe location, call emergency personnel.

Mold Information: Part 1

5/2/2017 (Permalink)

MOLD.  This is a word home owners or business owners dread to hear.  Mold can cause all kinds of issues and can be expensive to fix when you have a big problem.  Molds grow best in dark, damp, humid and warm conditions.  Mold spreads by reproducing spores.  Some molds can grow in a harsher condition as well.  Some common indoor molds are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria and Aspergillus.  Some people are more sensitive to molds and it can cause them to have skin and eye irritations.  People with allergies and lung conditions can develop infections, according to the CDC.

Here are a few locations that are more likely to have mold issues in your area:

  • Antique shops
  • Greenhouses
  • Saunas
  • Farms
  • Mills
  • Construction areas
  • Flower shops
  • Summer cottages

If you believe you are having a mold issue in your home or business, let SERVPRO of Jackson come do testing for you.  It is better to start working on the issue before it gets out of hand!  Call us at 601-353-2286!  #AlwaysHereToHelp

Mold Information: Part 2

5/2/2017 (Permalink)

How to prevent MOLD:

  • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
  • Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans.
  • Add mold inhibitors to paints before application.
  • Clean bathrooms with mold killing products.
  • Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
  • Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.

How can people decrease mold exposure?

Sensitive individuals should avoid areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Inside homes, mold growth can be slowed by controlling humidity levels and ventilating showers and cooking areas. If there is mold growth in your home, you should clean up the mold and fix the water problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, such as the ones offered by SERVPRO of Jackson.  We are knowledgeable and ready to help you clean up your mold problem today.  Call us at 601-353-2286.  Always Here To Help!

-Do not allow standing water in or around your home

-Use exhaust fans in your home

-Leave the AC Unit running when you are not at home

Fire Disaster

4/25/2017 (Permalink)

Electrical fires are the most common cause of household fires across the United States.  This is why home owners must be consistent on watching how electrical equipment is kept and making sure that cords are not frayed or damaged.  When electrical cords are frayed or old, it is a good idea to switch the cord out.  This also is something we must watch with our kitchen appliances and TVs also.  If home owners keep a close watch over cords and electrical equipment, it will lessen the chance that your equipment would cause a fire in your own home.  In older homes, it is a wonderful idea to have a licensed electrician come in to check your outlets and any wires he or she can get to in your home.  Over time, wires can fray which could lead to a fire. If a fire does occur and you need assistance, call SERVPRO of Jackson at 6101-353-2286.  Always here to help. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Flooding

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

A SERVPRO of Jackson team member extracting standing water out of a warehouse!

This is a great photographic example that shows what can happen when a flood or water damage occurs in a space.  This warehouse has a lot of water damage due to a flood in the area.  The water came rushing into the warehouse where it did not recede.  So this is when SERVPRO of Jackson was called in to take care of this situation.  When our team got to the site, they hit the ground running. After our production manager took a good look at the scene and formulated a plan,  we had several team members who started the extraction process. The water covered a large area in this warehouse, so our team used different methods to remove the water.  After the water was removed, the drying process began.  Our drying equipment was placed throughout the large area in order to successfully dry the concrete.  The owner of this building was very happy with our quick response and immediate formulation of the plan of action to get him back in business fast.

Water Damage in Bedroom

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

Drying Carpets and Walls

This picture depicts a water damage scene in which our SERVPRO of Jackson team was called out to after water leaked into the bedroom.  The carpet was saturated upon arrival so the team jumped into action.  When this happens, the carpet must be dried out and in this case, the wall needed to be dried also.  After the moisture readings were complete,  the team pulled the carpet back from the wall and begin to set up the drying equipment.  In this scenario, the carpet is dried with different equipment that the SERVPRO of Jackson teams brings with the to the site.  As you can see in this picture, the carpet is lifted as the equipment sends air under it.  This helps the carpet dry more quickly and efficiently.   The wall is being dried with the equipment also.  This customer was very pleased with the results from our work and was surprised that we were able to work so quickly to get this job finished for them.

Leaking from Above

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

Ceiling Water Leak

When water damage happens in an apartment unit, it can cause issues for the individuals who live around that leak.  There are several different common leaks that happen at an apartment.   These are leaks from the roof or windows, leaks from the air conditioner, leaks from plumbing fixtures, or leaks from pipes.  Those are common causes of lost when water damage is the ending result.  In the picture, you can see the leak came from the unit above.  The ceiling became saturated and ended up bursting.  When this customer called SERVPRO of Jackson, we were able to respond quickly, which is always our goal.  This impressed the customer.  Our team then began to clean the area in this apartment that was covered with debris from the ceiling and water from the leak.  Our team is knowledgeable in water mitigation and strives to respond quickly to jobs.  Our goal is to quickly make a disaster "Like it never even happened."

When disaster strikes in a commercial setting, it is very important for the company to immediately alert SERVPRO of Jackson. The faster we can get to your commercial location and begin mitigation, the more money we can save you and save insurance companies. Another extremely important step is to figure out what is causing the loss. The SERVPRO of Jackson marketing team offers a useful product called an Emergency Ready Plan, or ERP, that will be a guide to what to do during an emergency if the maintenance personnel is not available during an emergency. Are You Ready?

2/2/2017 (Permalink)

It is important to be prepared for disaster to strike. Without the proper preparation, families and communities can be completely devastated. Even though local officials and relief workers will be on a scene after disaster, they may not be able to reach everyone immediately. Therefore, it is important to prepare your home for the needs of your family, your neighborhood and your community.

When preparing for emergencies it is important to remember that basic utility services such as gas, water, electricity and telephones may not be available for a period of time. It will be vital to have certain supplies to mitigate these outages.

At a minimum, keep the following items in a central location in your home. Ensure that family members are aware of the "kit" in case of an emergency. Below is a list of items to keep on hand:

  1. 1 flashlight per person

  2. Extra batteries

  3. 1 gallon of water per day, per person

  4. Car charger for cell phone

  5. Non-perishable canned foods (be sure to have a non-electric can opener)

  6. Utensils

  7. Battery operated radio and clock

  8. First-aid kit

  9. Spare fuel

  10. Fire extinguisher

  11. Matches in a waterproof container

  12. Infant supplies

  13. Prescription medicine and glasses

  14. Whistle to signal for help

  15. Sleeping bags and blankets

  16. Sanitary items

  17. Pet supplies

"Resolve to be Ready" in 2017

1/20/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Urges Jackson Home and Business Owners to “Resolve to be Ready” in 2017

Local cleanup and restoration specialist shares no-cost emergency planning tools that enable fast and effective disaster response and recovery

Jackson, MS (Grassroots Newswire) December 20, 2016 - With New Year’s Eve rapidly approaching, now is the perfect time to think about making some resolutions, according to Robby Hansbrough, owner of SERVPRO® of Jackson. While resolutions typically involve committing to personal changes and reaching goals, Hansbrough says the single most important resolution both business and home owners can make for 2017 is to “Resolve to be Ready.”

“Preparing in advance to deal with the unexpected can make a world of difference in how quickly and completely property owners can put the pieces of their lives back together,” says Hansbrough. “Emergency readiness plans are the foundation for effective and timely emergency response.”

Hansbrough encourages all property owners to take advantage of the no-cost emergency planning tools available from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) (www.ready.gov/publications), as well as SERVPRO’s Emergency READY Profile and READY Plan Mobile App (http://ready.SERVPRO.com).

For homeowners:

  • FEMA resources include guidelines for a creating a Family Emergency Plan and Emergency Supply List, with additional tips for pet owners, seniors, people with disabilities, and even commuters.

  • SERVPRO offers their free SERVPRO READY Plan app, which stores critical contact and property information electronically in advance, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes.

For business owners:

  • FEMA offers materials on topics ranging from creating a Business Continuity Plan to an Insurance Discussion Coverage Form in addition to guidelines for creating an Emergency Response Plan.

  • For businesses, SERVPRO offers a no-cost facility assessment and assistance in creating a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP). The ERP includes information about emergency contact numbers, priority and high/risk areas, shut-off valve locations and more that can then be stored in the READY app.

“The time to gather and store information like emergency contact numbers; insurance contacts; and the location of fuse boxes, fire suppression system controls, and such is before an emergency strikes, not during an emergency,” says Hansbrough. “Having this information at your fingertips can help emergency responders react as quickly and effectively as possible, helping to limit loss of property and even lives.”

Does Your Jackson Home Have A Mold Problem?

1/19/2017 (Permalink)
